Specialty Care for Children

Childhood Weight-Loss Program

As a parent, you want to give your child a strong start on a healthy life. That’s why it’s so important to address a weight problem while your child is young. Being overweight raises a child’s risk for diabetes, heart disease and other physical and emotional problems. At Lehigh Valley Health Network, our weight-loss specialists are specially educated to address your child’s individual weight-loss needs.

Your child will receive nutrition counseling specifically designed for children. A weight-loss specialist will make adjustments to your child’s diet to achieve healthy weight loss (one to two pounds per week). Your child also will learn good eating habits and ways to avoid the repeated failures he may have experienced while dieting.

You and your child can also join FitKidz Plus. This six-week nutrition, behavioral and exercise program - for children (9-13) and thier parents - is led by a registered dietitian, social worker and fitness instructor. You and your child will learn healthy food choices and fun physical activities for any fitness level.

It’s "kid-friendly" and includes a variety of fun and interesting topics such as:
  • Exploring the Vegetable Jungle
  • Navigating the Restaurant Maze
  • Quench Your Thirst
  • Power-Packed Fruits
  • My Pyramid Power
  • Food Label Scavenger Hunt
  • Portion Distortion

Children and families also learn practical tips for leading a healthy and active lifestyle. FitKidz goals include:

  • Learning the importance of physical fitness
  • Understanding how to make smart food choices
  • Knowing nutritious foods + physical activity = healthy bodies
  • Boosting self-esteem, body image and confidence
  • Making friends and having fun

The program includes two, one-hour group sessions each week, led by an exercise specialist and registered dietitian. The dietitian will explore practical tips to make healthy food choices, and the exercise specialist will teach fun physical activities that can be adapted to accommodate any fitness level. These include kickboxing, Pilates and yoga.
